Program Goals

  • Guide UM students toward effective communication in a language other than their own.
  • Allow UM students to feel at ease as they try to function in another linguistic and cultural environment.
  • Ensure that UM students can continue studying the target language in the future by giving them a strong foundation in the basic structure of the language.
  • Encourage UM students to seek out opportunities to continue their language study beyond their study period and continue to apply their language skills in their future academic and professional careers.
  • Enable UM students to learn to function effectively in countries and cultures different from their own as global citizens.
  • Prepare UM students to have functional capability in less commonly taught languages that enhances their academic programs and enables them to travel, pursue study and research in a broad range of countries;
  • PrepareUM studentsto be able to initiate interactions with persons from other cultures and engage with them on issues of mutual concern.
